KALYANI: Prayag United SC scored twice in the first half to beat Shillong Lajong FC 2-0 in the 25th round of I-League in Kalyani Stadium on Friday (April 19). Ranti Martins fired the lead from a penalty in the 20th minute before Shylo Malswamtluanga got the insurance goal few minutes later.
The match got off to a brilliant start as Edinho Junior – Lajong FC’s Portuguese striker on loan from Blackburn Rovers – earned an opportunity within the first minute after the start. With the Prayag goalkeeper Subrata Paul out of position, the young striker shot the ball over. The very next minute Ranti had the chance to give Prayag the lead but the Nigerian striker delayed allowing his marker to clear the ball.
The host got into a nice rhythm and put pressure on the opponent leading to a penalty as visitors’ defence made error under stress. The Kiwi striker with the hosts, Kayne Vincent, peeled away on a darting run in the 18th minute to reach an aerial pass. But the Prayag striker was stopped unlawfully by the Lajong FC goalkeeper Lalthuammawia Ralte leading to a penalty. Ranti scored from the spot in the 19th minute to give Prayag the lead.
Prayag doubled the lead in the next good move in the 27th minute. Ranti played a measured through ball for Vincent, who waltzed into the Lajong box and set up the onrushing Malswamtluanga with square pass. The Prayag midfielder made no mistake with a first-timer that wrapped up the Lajong net.
Lajong FC had a few chances in the second half but Subrata Paul and defender Dipak Mondal saved the day for the hosts when Lajong FC substitute Sho Kamimura made two good attempts in the 74th and 78th minutes.
With the win, Prayag United rose to the third position in the league standings with 41 points from 25 matches while Shillong Lajong FC remained in the 10th spot with 25 points from as many matches.
