Kathmandu: Nepal’s Three Star Club clinched the domestic Martyrs’ Memorial A Division League to join Group A of the AFC President’s Cup 2013.
Three Star Club, the semi-finalists of the inaugural AFC President’s Cup in 2005, will host Group A featuring 2011 champions Taiwan Power Company, Mongolian representatives Erchim FC and Abahani Limited of Bangladesh.
Three Star were confirmed the winners after second-placed Manang Marsyangdi Club – the participants of the President’s Cup 2006 – failed to beat seventh-placed Nepal Police Club on Wednesday.
In an important day of the domestic league, Three Star later fired blanks against Machhindra FC but Manang’s failure to secure a win earlier confirmed them as the winners before their match against Machhindra.
With a match to spare, Three Star have 43 points while second-placed Manang sit on 38. The league will conclude next week.
The group stages of the President’s Cup will take place in early May. Nepal will host Group A while the Philippines and Cambodia are selected to host Groups B and C respectively. The finals are scheduled in September.
