Sheikh Russel Players lifting the Independence Cup |
Sheikh Russel KC once again proved that they are the best side in the domestic circuit after clinching their second title of the season with a 3-2 win over Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club in the final of the ATN Bangla Independence Cup football tournament at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.
Sheikh Russel, who also overcame Sheikh Jamal in the Federation Cup final to win their maiden crown in club history, were heavily dependent on Haitian hitman Sony Norde and local marksman Zahid Hossain Emily and the two strikers did not disappoint as they struck two crucial goals.
“Sheikh Russel formed a big-budget team aiming to win all the silverware and we are on course. Sheikh Russel deserved the victory,” said man-of-the-final Emily who has a reputation for scoring winning goals, having done so for Mohammedan, Abahani and Brothers Union in the past.
“Despite a 2-2 deadlock, we did not give up and I was optimistic that a chance would come to me and I availed that chance tonight,” said the national striker, who also scored one of the two goals against Sheikh Jamal in the Federation Cup final.
Praising his strike-partner Sony Norde, Emily said the Haitian is a brilliant player, who can change the course of the game at any time and under any circumstance. Sony had been a driving force behind Sheikh Russel’s success s he had scored the winning goal in the Federation Cup earlier in the season. The Haitian was named the best player of the tournament.
Sheikh Russel coach Maruful Haque had earlier expressed his concern whether his side would prevail if the match rolled into extra time, but yesterday he revealed that his boys were prepared for the extra effort with three hard-work sessions.
“We are now focusing on the professional football league and our main target is to win the prestigious league trophy,”
Sheikh Jamal players, on the other hand, were speechless as they came short once again against their nemesis.
“Luck was not on our side as we gave them the last two goals,” said a disappointed Sheikh Jamal captain Ariful Haque.
