VASCO: Salgaocar Football Club heaped more misery on United Sikkim Football Club as the home side coasted to a 9-0 win in a 23rd round I-League clash at the Tilak Maidan, Vasco, on Saturday (April 13).

With just three matches left to be played, United Sikkim find themselves at the bottom of the pool with five points adrift of safety. Salgaocar, on the other hand, took their points tally to 30.

Salgaocar led 3-0 at half time. Brazilian striker Josimar Martins scored a hat-trick while Francis Fernandes (2), Marcus Mascarenhas (2), OJ Obatola and Luciano Sobrosa were the other goal scorers for the former I-League champions.

When Salgaocar took the field, they believed United Sikkim, fighting to save the drop, would come hard at them. The visitors started well, even had a clear chance to score which Pablo Rodriguez missed after a free-kick had struck the goalpost in the ninth minute. But once Brazilian striker Josimar Martins gave the hosts the lead in the 14th minute when his feeble attempt wobbled past the goalkeeper, Sikkim were in the dungeon.

Sikkim goalkeeper Rakshit made a mess of a simple attempt from OJ Obatola for the second goal and Luciano Sobrosa converted from the spot to make it 3-0 inside the first half an hour as Sikkim defender Sandesh Jhingan brought down Josimar inside the danger zone.

Salgaocar did not slow down after the change of ends as Francis Fernandes scored two delightful goals with curls from just outside the box to make it 5-0 and in the 60th minute, Josimar added his second and the teams sixth from a goalmouth melee.

There were more goals still to come, Marcus Mascarenhas, who had stepped on to the field just a little while earlier to replace Obatola, scored a quick brace while Josimar completed his hat-trick.

United Sikkim had their chances to score at least a couple of goals but, either their strikers – Pablo Rodriguez and  Nurudeen Salau – were way off the mark, or found goalkeeper Karanjit Singh a hard nut to crack.
