At last, Shillong Lajong ended their winless run as they beat Mumbai FC 2-0 at the floodlit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, in Shillong, on Sunday.

Their North Korean recruit Minchol Son and India striker Sushil Kumar Singh scored the two goals – one in each half.

The win helped the North-East side leapfrog Pailan Arrows to reach the 10th spot. After 24 matches, they now have 25 points. On the other hand, Mumbai FC remain at 30 points from as many matches.

The home team were clearly the dominant side from the word go and in the 33rd minute, Son scored to give them the much-coveted lead. This put the visitors on the back foot straight away.

After the lemon break, Khalid Jamil’s men tried to make a comeback but Lajong defenders were up to the task. They showed no signs of complacency and actually pressed to extend the lead.

Their efforts bore fruit in the 77th minute as Sushil Kumar Singh landed the knock-out punch on the Mumbai-outfit.

Son was later declared Man of the Match.
